What Is the Liberian Seafarer Medical?
Cherries Medical Clinic provides medical fitness assessments for seafarers serving aboard Liberian-flagged vessels. The Liberian Registry, administered by the Liberian International Ship and
Corporate Registry (LISCR), is one of the world’s largest and most respected ship registries. Its medical requirements are fully aligned with international maritime standards, including the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006) and the STCW Convention. All assessments are conducted by our GMC-registered GP, who is experienced in maritime medical assessments.
Who Needs a Liberian Seafarer Medical?
This medical is required for officers and crew serving on Liberian-flagged vessels, for seafarers applying for or renewing a Liberian Certificate of Competency (CoC), and for engineers, navigators,
ratings, and catering staff employed on Liberian-registered ships. It is also required for those applying for a Seafarer’s Identification Document (SID) under the Liberian Registry.
What the Medical Assessment Includes
The assessment involves a full physical examination, a cardiovascular and respiratory assessment including blood pressure measurement, a vision assessment including the Ishihara colour blindness test, and a hearing assessment. Urinalysis is conducted, and any pre-existing conditions and
current medications are reviewed as part of the assessment. The doctor will assess your overall fitness for sea service, and a medical fitness certificate is issued upon satisfactory completion.
Medical Standards and Certificate Validity
The Liberian seafarer medical is conducted in accordance with MLC 2006 standards, the STCW Convention, and Liberian Maritime Regulations Chapter 18. The certificate confirms that the seafarer is medically fit for sea service and is free from any medical condition likely to be aggravated by, or to render them unfit for, sea service. The certificate is valid for two years from the date of issue, or for one year in the case of seafarers aged 55 or over.
Appointment Requirements
✔ Bring your passport or seafarer’s identity document
✔ Bring any previous maritime medical certificates
✔ Bring a list of your current medications
Pricing and Appointments
The Liberian Seafarer Medical is priced at £100. Same-week appointments are available at both our Slough and Southampton clinics. To book, please call 07306852397 or email info@cherriesmedicalclinic.co.uk.

The clinical content is broadly similar, as both are conducted in accordance with international maritime standards. The key difference is the specific regulatory framework: the Liberian medical is issued under LISCR and Liberian Maritime Regulations, whereas the ML5 is a UK-specific form. Please ensure you request the correct certificate type for your vessel and employer.
If the assessment identifies a condition that currently prevents a certificate being issued, the findings will be discussed with you and advice given on next steps, which may include referral for further investigation or treatment. A temporary or restricted certificate may be issued in some cases depending on the nature of the condition.

Dr Anwar is exceptionally helpful and professional. In a very short period he provided an appointment , met with my family member and provided a supporting letter to bolster an application for exemption from the Life in The UK test.
