A GB Fit To Climb Medical is a specialised health assessment designed for climbers to ensure they are physically and medically fit to participate in climbing activities. The medical follows guidelines set by the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC).
What’s involved in a GB Fit to Climb Medical?
- Questionnaires
Climbers complete self-assessment surveys, such as the Low Energy Availability questionnaire (LEAF-Q for females or LEAM-Q for males) and the Eating Disorder questionnaire (EDE-Q). These are attached as below and would be required to be completed before the consultation, so that the doctor can work out the individual scores alongside a physical assessment. - Physical Assessment
This would involve Height, weight, BMI, heart rate, and blood pressure to be recorded whilst seated at rest. - Medical Review
A GMC-registered medical practitioner reviews the questionnaires and conducts a physical examination. - Certification
If the climber meets the required standards, the practitioner certifies them as “Fit to Climb.” If not, further testing or investigation may be recommended.
Appointment Requirements
- Photo ID such as passport or driving license.
- LEAF-Q (Female Athletes aged 15+) or LEAM-Questionnaire (Male Athletes age 15+)
- LEAF-Q Scoreboard
- EDE-Q Questionnaire (including scoreboard)
- BMC/GB Climbing Health Certification Form
- Medications or Medications List.
