About the South Africa Visa Medical
The South Africa Visa Medical is required for applicants seeking a Critical Skills Visa, General Work Visa, or long-stay permit in the Republic of South Africa. The Department of Home Affairs requires a medical certificate confirming that the applicant is free from infectious diseases and physically fit, typically using the BI-811 medical certificate form.
Why Is This Medical Required?
The South African Department of Home Affairs requires this medical as part of the work visa and long-stay permit application process. The correct departmental form must be used, and some applications will also require the certificate to be apostilled by the FCDO.
Eligible Visa and Permit Types
✔ Critical Skills Visa
✔ General Work Visa
✔ Intra-Company Transfer Visa
✔ Retired Person Visa
✔ Long-stay Business Visa
What the Medical Assessment Includes
The South Africa Visa Medical includes a full clinical physical examination, blood tests screening for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, and a full blood count, and urinalysis. Where a Chest X-ray is required, a referral letter will be generated at your appointment so that you can take this to a private radiology department at a private hospital of your choice. The cost of the Chest X-ray is not included in the medical fee and typically ranges from £75 to £90 depending on the provider and location. The South Africa Department of Home Affairs medical certificate form (BI-811 or equivalent) will be completed and the required documentation issued at your appointment.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
✔ Valid passport
✔ South Africa BI-811 Medical Certificate Form or equivalent form specified by the Department of Home Affairs
✔ Passport-sized photographs
✔ GP medical summary or list of current medications
Certificate Turnaround
Your final medical certificate will be issued once all laboratory results and, where required, the Chest X-ray report have been received and confirmed as satisfactory. We will keep you informed throughout the process.

Yes — the South African Department of Home Affairs uses specific medical certificate forms including the BI-811. Please obtain the correct form from the South African High Commission or your immigration advisor before your appointment.
Some South African visa applications require the medical certificate to be apostilled by the FCDO. As our doctor is FCDO-registered, certificates we issue can be submitted for FCDO legalisation without difficulty. We will advise you on whether apostilling is required for your application.
Yes. Our examining doctor is FCDO-registered, which means he is legally authorised to attest and certify medical documentation for visa and immigration purposes in the United Kingdom. This is a key requirement for many visa applications, as the medical certificate may need to be submitted to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) for legalisation (apostille) before it is accepted by the relevant embassy or consulate. You can therefore be confident that any certificate we issue will meet the requirements of the embassy or immigration authority to which it is submitted.
Your final medical certificate will be issued once all relevant investigation results have been received. This includes blood test results from the laboratory and, where applicable, the results of a Chest X-ray (CXR). Where a Chest X-ray is required, we will provide you with a referral letter at your appointment so that you can attend a private radiology department at a private hospital of your choice. The certificate can only be issued once all results have been confirmed as satisfactory. Turnaround times depend on the specific laboratory and radiology provider used. We will keep you informed and updated at every stage of the process and aim to issue your certificate as promptly as possible once all results are to hand.

Dr Anwar is exceptionally helpful and professional. In a very short period he provided an appointment , met with my family member and provided a supporting letter to bolster an application for exemption from the Life in The UK test.
