G41 Working at Heights Offshore Medical Examination — £160

Medical Fitness for Working at Height in Offshore and Wind Energy Environments | Slough & Southampton

What Is the G41 Working at Heights Medical Examination?

The G41 Working at Heights medical examination is a specialist fitness assessment required for personnel who work at height in offshore, wind energy, and industrial environments. It is most commonly required for GWO (Global Wind Organisation) training and certification courses, for offshore wind technicians, rope access operatives, and for workers on platforms, wind turbines, or
other elevated offshore structures where fall protection is in regular use. The G41 examination assesses whether an individual is medically fit to work safely at height, with particular attention to cardiovascular fitness, musculoskeletal function, balance, and physical capacity.

Who Needs a G41 Medical?

The G41 examination is required for anyone whose job involves regularly working at height of 2.5 metres or above in environments where fall protection is required as a standard part of the role.
This includes offshore wind technicians and service engineers, workers undertaking or renewing GWO training modules such as Working at Heights Basic or Refresher, GWO Basic Safety Training (onshore and offshore), GWO First Aid, GWO Sea Survival, GWO Manual Handling, and GWO Fire Awareness, OPITO BOSIET and FOET candidates, and rope access and inspection operatives on offshore installations and elevated structures. It is important to note that the requirement relates to roles where working at height is a structural and essential part of the job — it does not apply to incidental ladder use.

What the Examination Covers

The G41 examination is a thorough assessment lasting approximately 60 minutes. It begins with a detailed medical history questionnaire covering general health, cardiovascular history, respiratory conditions, neurological conditions, medication use, and any prior conditions relevant to working at height. The clinical examination covers cardiovascular assessment including blood pressure and pulse, respiratory assessment including spirometry (lung function), and a resting ECG. Vision testing, hearing assessment, and colour vision are included. The musculoskeletal examination assesses joint mobility, balance, and physical strength, with particular attention to the neck, shoulders, and limbs to ensure full and safe range of movement. BMI and body weight are recorded, as your weight must remain within the certified safety limits of fall-protection equipment — the guideline maximum is approximately 130 kilograms. A fitness test assessing cardiovascular capacity (VO2 max) is included where required. Please note that a resting ECG is mandatory at the first G41 examination and from the age of 40 onwards.

Certificate Validity

The G41 medical fitness certificate is valid for two years for workers under the age of 50. For workers aged 50 or over, the certificate is valid for one year. The validity period for working at height is clearly stated on the certificate. Your certificate will confirm whether you are fit or not fit for working at height, and this will be explicitly documented on the certificate for presentation to your training provider or employer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) :

Do I still need a G41 if I have an OEUK offshore medical?

If your OEUK (or NOGEPA) medical has already included a formal working at height assessment, a separate G41 may not be required by your employer or training provider. However, requirements vary between operators and training centres — please check with your employer or GWO training provider before booking to confirm which certificate they require.

What happens if I exceed the weight limit for fall-protection equipment?

If your weight exceeds the certified limit for fall-protection systems — the guideline is approximately 130 kilograms — a not fit for working at height outcome will be recorded on your certificate. Working at height would not be permitted in this case, and there are no exemptions available. If you are concerned about this, please contact us in advance of your appointment.

How long does the appointment take?

The G41 examination typically takes approximately 60 minutes from start to finish. Your certificate is issued at the end of the appointment on the same day, provided all components of the examination are satisfactorily completed.

Is the G41 the same as the NOGEPA medical?

The G41 is a working at heights fitness assessment, whereas the NOGEPA medical is a broader offshore fitness examination. The two assessments can be combined into a single appointment at Cherries Medical Clinic. If you need both, please see our NOGEPA Offshore Medical Service page or contact us to discuss a combined appointment.

Dr Anwar is exceptionally helpful and professional. In a very short period he provided an appointment , met with my family member and provided a supporting letter to bolster an application for exemption from the Life in The UK test. I will be recommending Cherries Medical in the future
