Night Worker Medicals - Starting from £80

Night Worker Medicals – Onsite

We are now proud to be offering critical safety medicals for workers including on construction sites or Highways England. We offer Full Safety Critical Medicals – Onsite or at Our Clinic. We are open to enquiries from companies requiring critical safety medicals for their employees.

Disclaimer:- Please note that we are not currently SEQOHS approved and will in future be working to acquire this. Please check carefully with your line manager/agency if they are happy for your critical safety medicals to be non-SEQOHS approved. SEQOHS is an independent quality control entity and we do all our medicals exactly to this standard but the difference is we are not directly affiliated with this organisation as we are a small business. Check out our affiliations on our homepage.

Why Night Worker Medicals Are Important

Working night shifts can have a significant impact on health. Research links long-term night work with several co-morbidities such as (a) heart disease and circulatory problems (b) stomach and intestinal disorders (i.e. acid reflux, IBS or ulcers) (c) obesity and metabolic problems (including diabetes) (d) increased risk of certain cancers (e) sleep disorders, including insomnia and sleep apnoea (f) higher levels of stress and depression

Disrupted circadian rhythms and irregular eating patterns can affect overall wellbeing and make the management of chronic conditions more difficult. Regular night worker health assessments help protect employees, ensure safe working practices, and support employers in meeting their legal obligations.

What’s Included in a Night Worker Medical

At Cherries Medical Clinic, our night worker health assessment covers:

  • General health check: weight, height, BMI, blood pressure, blood sugar monitoring
  • Hearing test
  • Lung function test
  • Vision checks
  • Musculoskeletal assessment: joints, back, and muscle health
  • Previous medical history questionnaire: current medications and existing conditions

Conditions We Consider in Night Worker Medicals

Our occupational health professionals take into account a wide range of health conditions that may be affected by night work, including:

  • Diabetes – irregular shifts can affect blood sugar management
  • Epilepsy – seizures can be influenced by fatigue or disrupted sleep
  • Heart and circulatory disease – requiring careful monitoring during night work
  • Asthma and chronic chest disorders (COPD) – which can worsen with disrupted sleep patterns
  • Stomach and intestinal disorders – such as IBS or acid reflux
  • Chronic sleep problems – including insomnia and sleep apnoea
  • Mental health conditions – such as depression, anxiety, or stress
  • Back, joint, and neck problems – musculoskeletal issues aggravated by shift work

It is important to note that having one or more of these conditions does not automatically mean that an employee is unsuitable for night work. Instead, we review each case individually and provide clear advice and recommendations tailored to the role and the employee’s health.

The Process

  1. Pre-commencement screening: completion of a confidential health questionnaire before starting night work.
  2. Annual surveillance medicals: repeat assessments every year, or more frequently if required by the employer.
  3. Medical consultation: follow-up by phone or in-person examination if the questionnaire highlights any concerns.
  4. Confidentiality: all medical information remains confidential with Occupational Health. Managers will only receive a fitness decision outcome for their employee in the form of a certificate.
  5. Certificate issued: at the end of the medical, employees receive an official certificate confirming fitness or non-fitness to work nights.

If adjustments or restrictions are necessary, we will provide a full medical report with recommendations to ensure the health and safety of both the employee and the workplace.
